Unlike many other providers, SUNOVA connects its supporting substructure directly with the roof’s sealing layer. PV systems that are not fixed can move about in strong wind, thereby scouring the roof’s sealing layer and eventually causing it to tear. The Federal Materials Testing Institute in Darmstadt has tested the SUNOVA profile retainers for load-carrying capacity; the renowned I.F.I. Institute in Aachen, whose wind tunnel test methods are internationally known, has confirmed the exceptional wind suction resistance of the complete solar system. The SUNOVA flat roof solar system is welded onto the mechanically attached synthetic waterproof sheeting by a hot-air welding process using high-polymer profile retainers. This establishes a positive connection between the roof’s sealing layer and the PV system’s supporting structure without penetrating the skin or damaging it if the modules are removed at a later time. SUNOVA avoids penetrating the sealing layer, as this generally impairs its protective function. Every perforation requires an additional seal and presents a potential risk of leakage. Roof leakage, in turn, cause subsequential damage of the heat insulation; the perforations can build thermal bridges or impair the roof’s fire protection function. SUNOVA’s fixing method avoids all of these risks.

Unlike bonding with adhesive, which is prone to peeling and can hydrolyze through softener diffusion or chemically react with the roof’s sealing layer, the innovative hot-air welding process is the perfect solution to fully eliminate these risks. To avoid incompatibility of materials, SUNOVA makes sure that all connection materials used are fully compatible with the roof’s sealing layer. As a rule this means using only elements that are made of the same material as the roof surface.
